Side-Events During the 2nd World Conference of Indigenous Women

The 2nd World Conference of Indigenous Women (2WCIW) is a historic moment for all Indigenous women, girls, and Women with Disabilities who aim and dream of inclusive and just society and to set an example for those, working for the rights of all Indigenous Women to bring a significant change. In 2021, NIDWAN had an opportunity to not just organize 1 but 4 Side-Events on 2WCIW which was a platform to bring out the voice of Indigenous Women and Girls with Disabilities which had never been in the front. On August 13, 20 and 27 Nepal Time, NIDWAN led sessions on ‘Participating in decision-making spaces’,’UNDRIP, UNPFII recommendations and Outcome Document from the World Conference on Indigenous Peoples’, and ‘Intersectionality – a look at Indigenous Women with Disabilities’ respectively. NIDWAN in collaboration with Indigenous Women Consortium: NIWFederation, NIWForum and INWOLAG organized ‘CEDAW: General Recommendation on the rights of Indigenous Women’ on the second day.

Day 1: Participating in decision-making spaces

The first interactive session of Day 1:‘Participating in decision-making spaces’, was held virtually on August 13 where Mr. Binota Moy Dhamai ,( EMRIP , Asia member), Ms . Carla Bush ( PAWANKA Fund), Ms. Kakay Tolentino (Steering Committee Member, NIWA) and Ms. Pratima Gurung ( President, NIDWAN) where present as speakers and moderated by Ms. Pema Wangmo Mugum (NIDWAN). The panelist highlighted the situation of Indigenous Women with Disabilities and encouraged their efforts for claiming spaces within Indigenous constituencies. They also made commitments to work for the inclusion of indigenous women with disabilities with programs that supported Research and studies with intervention at all levels.

Day 2: UNDRIP, UNPFII recommendations and Outcome Document from the World Conference on Indigenous Peoples

The second interactive session of Day 2:‘UNDRIP, UNPFII recommendations and Outcome Document from the World Conference on Indigenous Peoples’, was held virtually on August 20 where Ms. Chongsin Koireng (representing Asia), Ms. Ipul Posuwa (representing Pacific), Ms. Christine Kandi e (representing Africa) and Ms. Olga Montufur (representing Latin America) were present as speakers and moderated by Ms. Ms. Pratima Gurung (NIDWAN). The panelist highlighted the weak implementation of the international instruments and the lack of measure to take those to the ground.
