National Indigenous Disabled Women Association – Nepal (NIDWAN), established in 2015, is a non-for-profit making nongovernmental organization founded and run by young indigenous women and girls with disabilities with a focus on ensuring, protecting, and promoting the rights of indigenous women and girls with disabilities. NIDWAN has programs on gender, disability, and indigenous rights including health, climate change, employment, inclusive humanitarian action, policy advocacy, research and documentation, and publication. NIDWAN works in the local, national, regional, and global arena to sensitize and engage in policy intervention.
In order to deliver effectively these programs, NIDWAN is looking qualified human resources for following positions based in Kathmandu valley –
Communication and Advocacy Officer
Position: Communication and Advocacy Officer (Kathmandu Based)
Reports To: Executive Head
Supervise To: None
Work Station: NIDWAN Central Office (Kusunti, Lalitpur)
Contract Type: Fixed term contract till December 2023 with possibility of extension upon the satisfactory performance. 3 months of probation applies.
Key Roles and Responsibilities:
Evidence Generation and Policy Advocacy:
- Conduct research and studies, carry out policy analysis, and design and develop advocacy interventions on the issues of disability, gender, and indigeneity from the intersectional framework that matters to indigenous women and girls with disabilities with a principle of equality and nondiscrimination.
- Influence and partner with stakeholders to develop and implement policy and advocacy strategies aligned with NIDWAN’s strategic plan
- Collaborate with likeminded stakeholders to develop advocacy initiatives that support the right to self-determination, individual autonomy, and choices of indigenous women and girls with disabilities
- Collaborate with concerned stakeholders to reduce violence and discrimination against indigenous women and men, girls and boys, and other indigenous persons with disabilities from LGBTIQ+ communities by creating inclusive and affirming spaces and promoting acceptance in both private and public spheres
- Develop policy briefs with policy options and recommendations on issues like climate change, disability-inclusive disaster risks reduction, social protection, local governance, disability-responsive budgeting, disability-inclusive social protection, and disability-inclusive development interventions that affect the indigenous women and girls with disabilities so as to inform and influence policymakers, decision-makers, and planners
- Prepare submissions and position papers outlining the organization’s position on relevant pieces of policy, legislation and relevant thematic issues
- Convene meetings with key decision-makers to dialogue around reforms needed to improve the supporting and enabling environment for indigenous women and girls with disabilities
- Enhance Media communication, dissemination, sharing and networking
- Develop and implement advocacy toolkits focused on NIDWAN’s core areas
- Remain informed and responsive in strategy and communication to policy developments that impact the sector and present opportunities for indigenous women and girls with disabilities to take a leadership position
- Measure the effectiveness of policy work/initiatives; define and lead change to meet objectives
- Build partnerships with various advocacy networks across the country, region, and internationally as well as with relevant staff in various local organisations
- Evaluate programmes, policy and legislation to improve the organisation’s knowledge base for continuous improvement
- Manages projects that fund NIDWAN’s policy, advocacy, and research work including liaising with donors and ensuring that objectives and expenditure targets are being achieved
- Build partnerships with various advocacy networks across the country, region, and internationally as well as with relevant staff in various local organisations
- Participate in committees, technical working groups and other fora to influence human rights issues, programmes, policies
- Effectively collaborate with NIDWAN’s executive board, secretariat, provincial networks, program teams to enable and facilitate indigenous women and girls with disabilities positioning across its core areas of focus and increase engagement of stakeholders through the strategic use of diverse media platforms
- Provide content for key communications material including website, newsletters and annual report
- Document and disseminate promising approaches, technologies, guidelines and learning of the programme for advocacy and policy development.
Communication, Social Media Handling and Regular Updates:
- Develop, implement and manage our communication and social media strategy
- Develop content for the organization’s website and social media platforms and work for the maintenance of the website and social media platforms.
- Oversee and manage NIDWAN’s all social media accounts like Facebook page, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram and YouTube ensuring accessibility standards.
- Draft social media contents and updates accordingly on a regular basis
- Draft publications, brochures, fact sheets, stories from the field to inform various stakeholders on the work of NIDWAN;
- Facilitate video producers to ensure NIDWAN’s are well captured ensuring its accessibility requirements;
- Measure the success of every social media campaign
- Stay up to date with latest social media best practices and technologies
- Attend various meetings, training and conferences and post these into NIDWAN’s social media accordingly
- Work with designers to ensure content is informative and appealing
- Participate in committees, technical working groups and other fora to influence human rights issues, programmes, policies
- Effectively collaborate with NIDWAN’s executive board, secretariat, provincial networks, program teams to enable and facilitate indigenous women and girls with disabilities positioning across its core areas of focus and increase engagement of stakeholders through the strategic use of diverse media platforms
- Coordinate production of a diverse range of information products including audio/visual communications and lead the development of IEC/BCC materials as per the program’s needs,
Required Qualification, Skills and Experience
- A minimum of bachelor’s degree in mass communication, law and or social science from a recognized institution with minimum 3 years’ experience in similar capacity in International/Non-Governmental Organization
- Excellent spoken and written communication skills in Nepali and English
- Substantive knowledge and practical experience in communication strategy development, including demonstrated expertise implementing visibility communications or media projects.
- Strong media contacts and proven success pitching stories to media outlets.
- Excellent writing skills, with experience writing reports, newsletters, and program updates.
- Computer skills specifically in Microsoft Office Package – Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Canva, Free Hand Design, etc.
- Excellent understanding of web production, social media, and multimedia tools.
- Intimate knowledge and ease of navigation of traditional and new digital and social media.
- Knowledge on infographics and electronic promotional materials and tools.
- Experience in back-office website management and social media
- Analytical, dynamic, smart, motivated, and positive
- Ability to work under pressure
- Good knowledge, understanding and/or interest in disability, social inclusion and social development and its issues
- Attention to detail alongside the ability to see the big picture.
- A positive collaborator and a strong team player
