Ms. Pratima Gurung, President of NIDWAN took part in the 21st session of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP-21) in Paris, France for the first time representing Indigenous People with Disability. Before the COP 21, she attended the Pre-COP session organized by Asia Indigenous People Pact (AIPP) from 16 to 18th September 2015 at Chaing Mai where she reflected on the impact of 2015 earthquake on Indigenous Peoples and Person with Disabilities and connected disability and indigeneity in Climate Change debate for the first time. After the Pre COP, she spoke at COP21 in Paris on 12 Dec 2015 in Side Event organized by AIPP and Indigenous Peoples Constituencies. She also engaged in different State negotiations and spoke as a speaker in Press Media Briefing as a representative of Indigenous Peoples and People with Disability. Her representation in the COP 21 was historical and instrumental because she in a team was able to negotiate with different member states and different stakeholders to include ‘Indigenous Peoples’ and ‘Person with Disabilities’ in the Paris Agreement document. So, her representation was a landmark in shaping the climate change debate among Women, Indigenous Peoples and Person with Disabilities. Since 2015, NIDWAN has been working in the climate justice debate both at national and global levels by doing research, engaging in advocacy, building the capacity of youths and lobbying at local to the global level.
